TUESDAY TECH TIP: Is it better to “defocus” an image in camera or in color correction? For a director of photography, it is often desirable to soften or filter an image in camera to achieve a dreamy effect or re-focus the attention of the viewer onto a different area of the frame. Ultimately it is better to create these effects optically in the camera. But, there are many ways to accomplish softening during post production in the color grading session if the DP desires “tweaking” the image further.

Today is actress Diahann Carroll’s birthday. Born in 1935, she is probably best known for her role as the title character in the television series, Julia, the first starring an African American woman not playing a domestic. Carroll was also the first African American woman to win a best actress Tony Award in 1962 for her role in the musical, No Strings.
