TUESDAY TECH TIP: Is it better to “defocus” an image in camera or in color correction? For a director of photography, it is often desirable to soften or filter an image in camera to achieve a dreamy effect or re-focus the attention of the viewer onto a different area of the frame. Ultimately it is better to create these effects optically in the camera. But, there are many ways to accomplish softening during post production in the color grading session if the DP desires “tweaking” the image further.
